Subject: Painting Instrument Bezel IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering what would be the best way to paint the instrument bezel on a 92 Dakota. It has that fake wood look that I hate so much. My plan was to give it a light sanding with like 200 grit paper then use automotive primer then spray with automotive touch up paint in the colour I want. will this work ok.

Message: I just painted mine with excellent results. I recommend you use a good quality primer which is flexible, fillable and sandable. Dupli-Color makes such a primer and the rest of their paint is excellent quality. Plus they make a clear coat (recommended for extra shine and for UV protection).
Sand your dash with 200 or 220 grit sandpaper. Take your time as this is the most important step. Once done sanding, thoroughly wash/scrub with paint thinner. Wait for this to dry and take a tack rag to it. When priming (and painting) use very light coats. When you think you have the primer "deep" enough to fill the texture, let it sit for at least 10 hours. Then sand with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper. Wipe with a tack rag and apply the finish color.
The finish color is applied the same as the primer, but drying time in between coats might be a bit longer. If you're looking for an extra smooth finish, you can sand after a couple coats and before the last coat. When this has dried for at least 12 hours, you can then apply the clear coat (which is the same steps). Aplying more coats of clear will produce a smoother finish and deeper color.
Done properly, plan on at least three to four days to complete your dash.

Message: I hate that fake wood look on my 95 also but I was thinking of a carbon fiber overlay. Less work than the sanding and painting. I pulled out my cup holder and painted the hidden part with a color matched paint and it did look nice but I think I would get tired of touching up every knick and scratch (it would bug me too much not too) so that is why I am looking into the overlay.

Message: make sure if you go with the overlay its quality and precut/// i tried the vinyl $#!t and black paint for the rest that wasnt flat and it turned out like crap.... it really looks nice if you take your time painting it, plus if you do enough clear coat, you dont get nicks and scratches that cant be buffed out with steel wool
