Subject: Rotton Eggs smell (CAT)? IP: Logged
Message: I recently had my after cat o2 senser replaced. I was getting a check engine light. That went away after having the o2 senser replaced. Now I do not get a check engine light but get a very strong rotton eggs smile every couple of days when driving. Could this be my catalic converter?

Message: I would would be tempted to say that it is the cat. I know that back in the 80's they would smell that way when they "full". I don't know if they act the same way now.....

Message: Usally this smell comes from H2S usually associated with septic wastewater. H2S is Hydrogen Sulfide and in diluted doses smells like rotten eggs. It is a by-product of decomposing organic organisms. I would to tend to think that there are sulfides present in your converter and causing the putrid smell. I have witnessed this smell at stop lights on rare occasions (from the vehicle in front of me) and believe it is either coming from the exhaust system somewhere or is a by-product of unburned fuel. Could fosil fuel contain decomposing organic organisms ? Maybe a different brand of gasoline would help deviate the repulsive smell.

Message: Hey guy. It is the cat that smells. If it gets hot, it will smell like rotten eggs. Also, if it's starting to plug up it will smell. If you hit wide open throtle and it sounds like a jet engine, you are clogging up. Also, cats aren't organic, they are rich in platinum to help convert, i.e. converters, the spent gases to a more acceptable level by enriching the expelled gases with more o2.

Message: I would check the fuel mixture for the cause of the smell. I think a plugged up coverter could cause this problem because of un-burned fuel, or an engine that is not in tune. When H2S is present it reduces or depletes the amount of available Oxygen, hence the malfunctioning catalatic converter. I still would look at air/fuel mixture, tune-up or a premium grade of gasoline. Bottom line is, it really stinks and I hope you find a solution. Heres a plus, when the saturation of H2S gets high enough (in Parts per Million) it will burn your olfactory system and you won't be able to smell it. BTW H2S is heavier than air, that is why you probably smell it lingering around your truck.

Message: If you take temp. readings before and after your converter you should be able to tell if it is plugged. I had a plugged converter on a chevy and the Y pipe was red hot and the tailpipe was cool.
