I'm thinking about buying a 2002 Quad Cab 4X4 with the 4.7L engine soon. Any recommendations or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Got a 01 Quad, 4.7,5sp,LS,Buckets,heavy duty cooling & electrial, sport package ,16" Tire/wheels and factory skid plates.
Forget the composite, read plastic, skid plates.
Had I known they were "composite" I wouldn't have got them.
The 4.7 has what, I would consider more than enough power, unless you just have to have a 5.9 and mileage isn't a consideration.

I have a 2000 quad cab and love it! I wouldn't get the 5.9 because supposedly it has terrible gas milage, something like 6 miles a gallon from a guy I know with 99 Ram.

I have a 2001 QC w/ 5.9L and 3.92 gears. Computer shows 18-19 mpg on highway and shows 12.6 mpg for the last 3200 miles. I have 5000 miles total as of today. Hope this helps you decide.

The 4.7 is far superior for a lot of reasons.
The most important being durability, not to mention cost.

The benefits for the bigger engine are not extreme enough to warrant buying it.

Get the 4.7, you'll be glad you did.

If you do a search on mileage, you'll get about a million posts on this. 5.9 vs. 3.9 vs. 4.7. It's all there if you have a few hours to read it all.

I will say this. I drive a '01 QC, 5.9, 4x4, 3.92 rear. Last week I drove from CO to MA. Some back roads, some highway, no trailer. I have a CAI and a Hypertech, otherwise bone stock. I averaged 15.8 mpg.

I got the AWD on mine. Works great. Saves on tires and is wonderful in the winter. My truck has the 4.7 Auto and gets 18-20 on the hiway and about 13-15 in the city. Other suggestions -- stockpile balljoints and brake rotors.

My 04 Dakota is a couple weeks old and the computer reads 13.9 MPG no matter what. I was driving around with the windows down....somewhat uncomfortable, but happy to be "saving" on gas. I did a little experiment for a few days and had a little AC action....no change in MPG. :)

I've gone through 3 tanks of gas so far on my Dodge Dakota. My mileage has been (mpg):

Tank 1: Computer=15.9, Calculated at Pump=14.9
Tank 2: Computer=15.7, Calculated at Pump=14.7
Tank 3: Computer=16.2, Calculated at Pump=14.7

The first and third computer readings are off because I hit reset a few times near the beginning to look at hwy/city miles...so those numbers aren't a true avg for the whole tank (just most of it). The second reading covered the whole tank...about 1 mpg off.

I would say Highway I average about 17-18 and City 10-12.

I have a 2004 4.7L 5SpdAuto QC FullTime4WD LSD 3.92 HDPackage Towing etc...I figure I have about the worst combo for gas mileage, but I'm pretty happy getting close to 15. Going to add a Tonneau soon.

Just for reference I have a 2001 Quad Cab 5.9L, AWD, 3.92 gears an average mix of highway and city driving.
Consistantly gets 12-13 mpg per computer, 14-15 calculated at pump.
Even with several bolt on options no significant change + or - in gas mileage from stock.
Still, if your planning on any towing, opt for the 5.9L. IMHO

Doesn't the 4.7 w/ 3.92's have a better tow rating then the 5.9?

I have an 02 QC 4.7 auto AWD with 3.55's. None of the modifications I've done have affected the MPG + or -. Some mods I've thought may help, others are performance, for performance's sake. But no MPG change.

Mods done: removed clutch fan, HO cams, Volant air intake, soft tonneau, synthetic lubes in engine, tranny, diffs, xfer case.
