Subject: Popping noise in Front end
IP: Logged

Message:
I have seen many posts on this but can't seem to convince my dealer that this is a problem. Any suggestions?

Just a summary, when I turn hard to the left or right or brake hard, the front end makes a popping noise and I can feel it through the steering wheel. My dealer says this is "Normal". I don't think so. I saw a previous post saying that someone replaced the Trans. crossmember and torsion bar anchor pins and this fixed it. I told my dealer this and he looked at me like I had 4 heads. Anyone with suggestions, would be great!!

Thanks!

I think I know what youre problem is. My 95 made that noise and the dealer tightened a bolt on one of the suspension components. after a front end allignment, it's fine now. They may have to replace the bolt. Good luck.

I have the same problem with my '98 2wd.
After having both sets of ball joints replaced and an alignment, I still have the noises and bump feel in the wheel. Also the left front tire is scuffing bad on the outside.
I jacked it up by the lower control arms and all appears tight.
I need new tires but it ain't going to happen til I get this figured out.

BMac, my 98 2wd does the same thing...I have read about it here, and think I have heard it to be a steering item, but have not located that discussion about it yet. If I find it, I will post it here for us.

Check this out:
go to www.speedtweaks.com
go to Tips and Tricks
read about upper control arm bushings

Maybe this is our problem?

BMac,

I have also noticed wear on my left front. I didn't say this before but I have a 2001 QC with 8000 miles on it. The popping noise started probably about after 1000 miles, maybe sooner. I wonder if the TSB is good for the 2001 since it has been a problem for all other years. Guess I'll take it to the dealer and have them replace the bushings and see what happens.

P.S. The website is www.speedtweaks.net. :-)

Guys, I had something like that also, it turned out to be the steering column, the dealer replaced it and no more problems.

I did notice the rear right upper control arm bushing is pushed back(shot) so it may be the problem, or at least part of it.

I guess it could be the steering column but I also feel and hear it sometimes when I brake hard, but not all the time. Definitely hear it more when I turn.

Hey guys, i had the same problems as you on my
2000 4wd at only 20k miles. I have had the upper
control arms and ball joints replaced along with
the stering column. The column was replaced due to
a bad bearing (thrust maybe). the noise occured
when stopping and when accelerating in mine. But i
have fought with my dealer to replace the ball
joints since i knew they were bad. Finally took me
finding the boots worn thru for them to replace
the damn things. So far so good no real pops
except at extremes which is probably the bump
stops. Hope this helps!!!

I have a 01 cc sport with the same problem. It made a popping noise when i turned the wheel and when i hit the brake pedal. I could also feel it in the wheel and brake. The dodge dealer replaced the steering shaft and it solved the problem. They said the shaft was moving around and was making the noise. It hasnt popped since..good luck

There seems to be alot of this problem out there I have also had this problem with my 99 2wd dak. After having upper ball joints replaced wich parlty cured the problem the Famous POPPING noise was back agrivating me more than ever! After investegating this problem with a friend we noticed that upper control arm was sliding around on the two LOOSE mounting bolts. I took my truck back to " THE DEALERSHIP" and gingerly explained my little Problem. After a front end alignment and tightend bolts I was own my way home to check their work. I slightly jacked each corner of the truck and snugged the nuts tight through the wheel wells with a 22mm 1/2 inch socket and torque bar with fence post extension, carefull now not too much! That seemend to fix the problem However If they work their way loose again I plan on locating some better quality lock nuts . I hope this cures your problem it worked for me. Anybody know where I can get some aftermarket control arm bushings. I can get the uppers but not the lowers. Dealer wants to sell me the whole control arms for 2 or 300 bucks each. They dont offer just the bushings. Thats not gonna happen. I am having that same damn popping noise as everyone else

Hm. I have a similar sound, but only when I hit
a bump on the passenger side, not (yet) when
I turn the wheel. Do you think this is related? It
almost sounds like something is a bit loose
on the passenger side front wheel or
undercarriage.
