Subject: 4.7 with 5 speed IP: Logged
Message: I am about to order a 02 dakota club cab sport 4x4 with 4.7 and a 5 speed manual. Does anyone here have this combo? How do you like it? Is this combination better than a 3.9 and 5 speed, or 4.7 and auto combo, for reliability, power, gas mileage? Seems I see alot of auto trans problems, and poor gas mileage complaints.Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks

Message: I have that combo (except mine is 2wd) and I love it! A lot depends, though, on the rear end you decide to go with, the 3.55 or 3.92. Mine has a 3.92 and it feels too "jerky" for me, but I'm lifting the truck so the larger tires will help that. If you keep it stock, I would go with 3.55's (unless you are doing major towing, drag racing or putting larger tires on later). As for MPG, my overhead computer says its getting about 14.7 on average. But I have a heavy foot and the truck only has 400 miles on it.
I ordered my 2002 QC just last month and picked it up last week! Its FUN to drive with the 5spd!! Just my opinion... ;-)

Message: I have that combo and love it. I think, from what I have been told by others, that the 4.7 is the way to go, especially with the 5spd. A lot smoother with the same amount of power.
The only thing I did was replace the shift knob with something a little more comfortable.
Good Luck,

Message: Go with the 3.92 because a 4x4 comes with bigger tires anyway. I have this combo with a 4.7 5 speed and love it (performance wise). At 80 mph I think it is running around 2550 RPM. What more do you want? Do yourself a favor and make sure to buy from a dealer w/ loaner cars.
Another option to consider NOW would be a limited slip rear.

Message: Will,
Why should I need a loaner car with a new truck? Are you suggesting that my truck might be making extended visits to the dealer? Has that been your experience?

Message: I'll refer you to the Dealer Recall section of this forum. Daks are fun, but they don't have Toyota reliability.
My current dealer doesn't do loaners, and they suck. Buy from someone who will take care of you, and you will be much happier...Unless you have a spare car of your own to use.

Message: I have the RC/2WD/4.7/5spd/3.92 combo and I REALLY like it so far! Hell, I took almost a 200 mile trip in it the first day I got it and it's comphy ride!
My dad drove it yesterday to get it fitted for snow tyres while I was at work and he actally liked it a lot. In all aspects of where things like controls were, no confusing places for them. The sterring wheel does not block the clock (Toyota) and it's bigger than it looks inside. Can't forget the oomph it had either! This is all coming from a guy who is a dedicated Toyota fan (3 vehicles) and one GMC 1500.
I didn't get the 4WD because of the cost and because I wanted 2Wa lil more. The 4WD was REAL nice when I test drove a couple vehicle, putting A LOT of miles on one of them...had to be around 50. With the flick of a switch and I'm in 4x4...THAT is cool and it really pulled to the road on those hard turns on gravel.
"As for MPG, my overhead computer says its getting about 14.7 on average"
14.7 my ass! I have ~480m and I get more like 8 or 9! DAMN...
"The only thing I did was replace the shift knob with something a little more comfortable"
I mean, I don't keep my hand resting on the shift knob all day, like the movies teach you, but damn, that thing really isn't very good. Where can I find a nice shift knob for it? Not something like *!!!MOMO!!!* oooo, ahh.. ether, heh.

Message: 8-9!!! That is just plain unnaceptable. You might as well be driving a 3/4 ton with a big-block. I am now reconsidering my like of this truck when I hear stories like that.

Message: I have an '02 4.7+5 speed w/ 3.55LS (2wd). I wish I had gone with the 3.92 so I can cruise in slow traffic easier. But I've been getting 16-18MPG with alot of city driving and bat out of hell driving. My worst gas milage has been 15.5. But that was the first tank where I probably lost 2/32" of trad depth in peeling out :D
DEFINATELY get the limited slip.
Gas milage readings so far:
15.5
17
18
16

Message: Got the 5spd in my 00 QC 4x4 with the 4.7. Does well. In town mileage is a drag (8-9mpg) highway is a lot better (14-16). Only complaint is the 5th gear; to get any kind of decent performance with it you need to rev close to 2000rpm or higher. Else you need to down shift in inclines and to pickup speed for passing.
I like the long 2nd gear for accelerating, the 3rd is decent if you shift to it near 3K. The engine likes the 4rth for highway fun.
Enjoy.

Message: I have 2WD Quad Cab w/3.55 limited-slip and the 4.7/5spd combo. I average 18.8 in the Sierra-Nevada foothills of California since I bought it. Highway miles run around 21-22. I have gotten 23.5 hwy with the tailgate off. I drive like I don't have any brakes, though. No jack rabbit starts, not brake-burning stops at the light, shift up at 2000RPM.
2WD with limited-slip and handling package handled great in the snow last winter, too!
