 Subject: Replacing snock absorbers

I have a 1994 Dodge Dakota V8 5.2L engine. I am looking for information on the best way to change my left and right front shocks. For some reason, I am unable to get the top bolt to unscrew because the cylinder turns and I am having a hard time getting a tool between the springs to grip the cylinder so I can get the top bolt released to remove the shock. If anyone having had this experience, please tell me how I can remove the shocks. Thanks in advanced for any help given.
