 Subject: Hard to get into gear

Hi. My 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 SXT (manual) recently and suddenly would not go into gear at the end of the off ramp of the highway. I was eventually able to force it into gear, and later realized it will go easily into gear when turned off. With some effort I can drive it in reverse, first, second, but I am worried about getting stuck somewhere, so I'm not currently driving it. My mechanic thinks it needs a new clutch. Is there any chance it could be something less than a whole new clutch? Also for as long as I have had the truck (5 years) it has had a high clutch, ie. I have to push the pedal to the floor to shift. But have not really seen any other symptoms of my clutch going before the incident. Thanks!
