It uses ATF+4 fluid.

There is a drain and fill plug, they screw in, to
the rear of the transfer case. The fluid should be
up the bottom of the plug.

I am getting ready to change the transfer case fluid in my 2000 SLT 4.7 liter. The manual calls for 2.5 pints, which is 1.25 quarts. And as mentioned in the posts I will be using Valvoline ATF+4, which replaced ATF+3.
