Subject: 4.7 headers IP: Logged
Message: umm, ok. I've put on jba headers for my 4.7 2001 dodge dakota. Damn thing has been leaking ever since at the driver's side collector. (I know, I finally found a big exhaust stain there) I can never get a full seal there. I think the flange i warped. I've tightened it againa and again. I've had 2 shops work on it. Same story. I don't wanna take it out and return it to jba, because of all the work i put into it. To take it off and put a new one in will make me lose my sanity, but i'll guess i'll do it if there's nothing else to be done. Anything I can do. Maybe I can put a gasket in there? What size and type if so. I was thinking about having it welded shut, but i don't think they can do that. Please help. I'm pulling my hairs here.

Message: You probably thought of this already but copper gaskets will seal up any leaks. Also dont reuse lock washers and make sure when you put them on you tight them down center out.
If this doesnt work take them out and either change with JBA or machine them flat again.

Message: Oh and yes you can weld them but i would not do this. Headers dont last as long as the original manifold. They rust out. Now if you trade the truck and the dealer spots the weld your trucks value will go to crap. And if you dont trade and your headers leak or rust out you will need to break all the welds in a hard to get area and hope you dont damage anything. Spend the time to take them out if it doesnt work and do it properly.

Message: thanks for the help, Mar, but I think you think my leak is at the heads. I've made sure there is no leaks there. It's leaking at where the collector meets the y-pipe

Message: Try puting a exhaust donut in between the header and the flange

Message: Yeah your right. I though it was at the head. But you can still use copper gaskets there. And yes you can weld. I heard on the other board that someone told you to extand the y pipe. Just weld it.

Message: One more thing. Usually it will leak a little there in the bigging. It will carbon up and the leak will stop.
