Subject: 2004 Quad Cab HD suspension

Message:
Recently purchased a 2004 Dakota Quad Cab 2wd V8
with tow pkg and heavy duty everything - the way I
wanted it. Low 52,000 miles, Califirnia and South
Carolina CarFax, rust free. Love it - looks great
- runs great!
Of course, it needs ball joints which will be
done soon.
I have only two concerns - the tires and the very
stiff unforgiving jittery ride, especially from
the rear, to the point that the bed seems to
jiggle for a moment or two after hitting bumps.
The tires on it a SAILUN TERRAMAX H/T M+S
245/70R16 - Tread: 2 poly, 2 steel, 1 nylon
Sidewall: 2 poly. The correct size should be
255/65R16 according to my VIN No dealer options
report. Am I wrong or is this an overly firm extra
load type tire? Might this be a factor in what
seems to me to be an unforgiving ride? I'll
probably go back to the Goodyear Wranglers after I
wear these down some more - or other suggestions?
My second question has to do with the suspension
and shocks. The dealer build sheet says Code:
SDBS for heavy duty Suspension and lists SFBS and
SGBS for front and rear HD shocks. To imnprove
the compliance of the ride, is it possible to go
with a less HD shock or an adjustable shock
without adversely affecting the handling and
balance of the truck?
FYI - My last truck that I just sold with 190,000
miles was a 1998 Ford F-150 reg cab shortbed with
HD suspension - and the ride was very compliant -
so that is my perspective. I'd like to get the
perspectives of you folk who know Dakotas.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
