 Subject: Gen II Front 4x4 Differential Into Gen I

Hello to any drive train experts-
I need to know if a front differential taken from a '96 Dakota can be used to replace the front differential and bolt right in to a '87 4x4 Dakota.
Apparently they have different part numbers but I can't easily take measurements of the '96 (it's 200 miles away).
Thanks for any experience and help on this question.
