Subject: FOG light question
IP: Logged

Message:
Well two actually..

1. Both my fog light lenses are cracked, one filled with water and apparently shorted out. Is this covered in the warranty?

2. If not, is there an aftermarket fog/driving light that will fit the opening perfectly and plug right into the factory harness?

Thank you

Geoff

It could be covered under warranty. I have read reports of others with similar problems and have had the fog lamps replaced under warranty with no problems.

I would imagine that as long as there are no overt signs of damage like from running through brush off-road, I would think a dealer would have no problem replacing them.

Are the ones from vehicle lighting direct replacement or will i have to do extensive wiring and mount fabrication?

Dude I have had mine replaced twice under warrenty and have only had the truck since like June! They crack and then fill up with water like they have gotten hot or something and just crack from the inside out? Mine started with a little moisture in the back then they just start crackin! But I know what you mean and they must be covered since they have replaced mine twice no questions asked!

Mine were replaced by Auto World a Dodge Dealer in Big Stone Gap Virginia. This is where I bought the truck and they have great service and give awesome information about what they sell, really good prices guys! This place is located in Southwest Va.

The ass oles at the dealership said it was "Road Debris" and never heard of the heat/cracking thing. The guy actually said if he replaced them under warranty he would be stealing from chrylser. he said it was road debris even though he could not explain how a rock impact could cause such a crack pattern, 8itches.

I guess i will now try the dealership where i got the truck even though its two hours away. I will never go to that dealer again

By the way the offending dealer is Al Smith Buick-Dodge-Mazda in Raleigh, NC keep away from that place its a five star too They must give that away.

Any other ideas would be great.

Thanks

TXQC 2000 over on the Edmunds board said that the PIAA 510's were an exact replacement for the oem fog lights.

They come in both fog and driving.

I wanted to purchase a set because my rig didn't come with them. Did matter at the time, as I heard the stock lights pretty much sucked.

Maybe we could get a group buy

I would agree that they should be replaced under warranty but if you can't get them to do it then check out Ebay! I have seen some OEM fog lights go for under $30.-

Yep. I had the same problem with the one cracked lens and the other one fogged up. Took it to the dealer and the service manager tried to say it looked like an impact damage. Salesman was there when he said that and before I could say anything he told him to replace them under warranty. Palmer Dodge Roswell, Ga. I think there is a heat from the bulb cracking the inferior plastic lens.

xplikt - fog lights would be best compared to a floodlight. The beam is very wide and does not project forward at a great distance. A driving light is more like a spot light. its beam is focused forward and therefore does not light the side of the road but rather lights down the road.

IMOHO the diving lights are what I would need due to the fact that the Dakotas main beams are wide, but they don't shine down the road at a great distance.

I made debris guards fo rmy fog lights from some 1/4" screen bought at a hardware store. Cut a cirle of screen 3/4" larger than the diameter of the opening. Cut in 3/8" every 1" or so around the perimeter then fold back the "tabs". Paint with flat black for Sport or bright silver for SLT, then apply 3/16"x1/2" weatherstripping from the hardware store around the tabs with the adhesive side inward. Push fit the whole assembly into the opening for the foglights. The weatherstripping will hold the screen in the opening without damagiong the paint. The whole thing is easily removed for cleaning the lens.

Total cost? About $10.00 with paint... And you don't have to get out and remove them to use the fog lights like Dodge's plastic covers...

Does anyone know of any aftermarket fog/driving lights that hook up to the existing wiring harness? I have fog lights on my Dak, but they are, like everyone elses, cracked. I don't want to rewire anything, but also don't want to get Mopar lights from the dealer. Looking for an aftermarket brand that plugs right into the existing harness. A lot of people use the Pilots, but doubt they "plug in".

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
