Subject: Hard reverse shifting.Help?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just bought a 92 Dakota sport 5 speed manual, V6.
Didn't shift into reverse on my test drive. Bought from private party.
Came home and it is REALLY hard to get into reverse. Just won't go without a lot of pushing, jerking, talking to it. Shifts into any forward gear fine.
Any ideas of what the problem is? 160,000 miles.
Thanks for any advice. Lynn.

You will probably not be able to shift from 5th to reverse, because there is usually a lockout so you don't do it accidently on the highway at 70 mph. Your problem could be a linkage problem and may be an easy fix. I am not familiar with manual trannys or I would try to help more.

Without being nasty about it, I meant while your at a stop, trying to get it into rev. I guess I should explain myself better. When at a COMPLETE stop, put it into rev, if it doesn't go into rev easily, put it into 5th, and bring it back down into rev. Like I said, I'm not promising anything but it has worked for me in the past although mine might not have been as bad as yours, I would try this first, hell it's free then try others.

Hey Lynn, got the dakota, huh? Pretty cool! Any of you guys think that it could be synchros? I know mine sometimes grinds when I put it in reverse, and sometimes I have to release the clutch a little to get it into reverse. I was told that this is because there are no synchros for the reverse gear. Any thoughts?
