Subject: 3.7 V6 in Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Is the new 3.7 V6 going to be offered in the 2002 Dakota? I am getting conflicting information. Someone on this or another forum said that the 3.7 probably will not be offered until the redesign in 04, one dealer said after the 1st of the year, and a saleman at another dealer said they are being built now because the only V6 option he has in his computerized order system is the 3.7. Who is right? does anyone know the answer? I would prefer the newer tech of the 3.7.Also I inquired about a 5 speed, rather than the auto because of all the problems there seems to be with that tranny. But the dealer says they don't even order them for stock because no one wants them, and there resale sucks. Which way should I go, I plan to keep this truck along time.
thanks

Message: No 3.7 in the 2002 dakotas. There is one on the lot right now and it has the 3.9.

Message: Neither have I. The most problem I have ever had with my Dakota was the ball joints, cat, brake rotors (they put really cheap rotors on factory), and for some strange reason my gas gauge has started wandering which doesnt bother me much. My mech at the Dodge dealership is going to replace whatevers going bad (he said its a very very uncommon problem, the first hes ever heard about it as a matter a fact). Other than those small problems, I love my truck.
Its a 1999 Dodge Dakota 3.9l SLT CC. But don't be weary of the problems I just mentioned. Not everyone has those problems. And even if you do the things that are going to cost you the most are more than likely covered under warranty. I didn't have the rotors or ball joints replaced with factory parts again though. I went out and finally got some top quality rotors and had custom ball joints made that are lub'able. Heh. The cat is covered under the 7 year warranty. Maybe even the ball joints, but I'm not too sure about that one and I am too lazy to walk out to my car and check my 7 year warranty. Heh.

Message: The 3.7L is a SOHC. the 3.9L is OHV. I'm still undecided about the 3.7L. Lots more HP but very little gain in torque. These aren't the lightest vehicles to move around. Sounds like they are falling into the chevy trap of high HP, no torque.

Message: I have drove one in the Jeep Liberty and with the auto they are very low on torque, lower than the 3.9. If you don't mind shifing gears I would get the 5 speed. Those little motors like to rev.
