Subject: Ticking engine
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently purchased an 05 Dakota club cab, 3.7 v6, with 73k
miles on it. The engine has a rather abnormal tick to it. It's
there from the time you start the truck until the time you shut it
off. Sounds as though it's coming from the right side. The
ticking increases with acceleration, and never goes away. The
truck idles around 600rpm once warm and is a bit rough
(vibrates a good amount, but doesn't seem to be erratic or
missing) other than that it seems to have plenty of power and
runs smoothly. After a bunch of research I think I've narrowed
it down to a few culprits, lash adjusters, timming chain,
exhaust leak...or worse. I hate to just start slapping new parts
in in hopes of it fixing the problem. I'm planning on going
ahead and taking the valve covers off to check for bad lash
adjusters/rocker arm. While I've got it apart, if I put the #1
piston at tdc and verify the location of the camshaft sprockets
will the be a good enough indication of a warn timming chain,
broken tensioner? Also, I'm imagining if I do indeed have a
collapsed valve adjuster the rocker arm would have play in it,
am I correct, or is there more to it?
