Subject: Power or Fuel or Computer Problem?

I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT. I've had it for 4 plus years now and have had no problems with it until now. I drove it from Kansas to Arizona and haven't been driving it much in the past month or so. Last week I got in it and it was hard to start (as if the battery was low). I got it running and drove it about a mile and it died when I pulled in the parking space. About 15 minutes later I went through the same starting it and it died again pulling back into my parking space at home. The very next day it wouldn't start at all, making that clicking sound like when the battery is toast. I let it sit over the weekend and Monday at lunch the damn truck started right up and ran like a champ all the way to the dealer (NO PROBLEMS). I left it with the dealer for 3 days and when I picked it up they told me they found nothing wrong with it. No error codes on the diagnostic, no problems starting it or anything. I took it from them and drove it home. The next day I got in it and it wouldn't start again like the battery is dead. I jumped it off and it died the first couple times when I let off the gas, and finally it stayed running. (Its running now) I NEED HELP!!! (ANY SUGGESTIONS?)

welcome to the club! lol. i've going though the same problems for about two months now. it has settled down after started to drive faster. don't ask.... i just started driving a little faster, and faster i drive my 1998 ext. cab sport with the 3.9L more it acts like it loves it.?? so it dosen't give hardly any problems. i'm suggesting you go out and start getting spending tickets or anything, but you got to find out what makes your truck happy i guess. yes it's a little weird (and no i'm not a mental case), but i've notice almost all the daks the i've encountered is that they all have little quarks. so good luck on finding out what makes your dak happy. lol.. thank you and have a good day.

Might want to check to make sure all your grounds have a good connection. Chryslers are famous for bad grounds.

You may just have dirty bat. terminals or a battery starting to go bad. They can get an internal poor connection and give the exact symptoms you have. Next time it seems low or dead measure your battery voltage - preferably while cranking it. As far as the stalling, if it is your battery it will reset the pcm memory and if your throttle is dirty or the min. throttle not set right you will get the coming to a stop die out. Could also be an intermittent speed sensor esp. if it is a 5 speed. Quick test for that is to try your cruise if you have cruise. Can't remember if the 97 has a speedo cable if it doesn't that will also let you know your speed sensor is inop. Also might not have a speed sensor - my 99 used the anti lock rear sensor, but the 92's used a speed sensor on the trans. I don't know what the 97 uses. Sorry

Man, I let the damn thing run for a half hour. Got in it and went to back it up into a different parking spot and it died on me again. Started up with a little trouble and it died again when I put it in gear. Today the battery is dead again. Gonna change it out and see what happens. How frustrating is this. 4 years and no problems, now this stuff when I'm 1500 miles from home, and have to be back next week. AARRGGHH!!!

did anyone ever think of this one????

first: go to your local dealer and buy a throttle body gasket

second: remove throttle body from truck and place in a bucket or pan.

third: clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner , make sure you clean every hole and port on it.

fourth: remove and clean the idle air control motor, but make sure you do not twist the pintle or else you will be buying a new IAC motor.

fifth: reinstall IAC motor in throttle body, install new gasket and reinstall the throttle body.

most idle problems on dakotas usually are from dirty throttle bodies and IAC motors. For a more indepth how-to on this visit bernd's site at www.speedtweaks.net go to the tips and tricks section and he has the whole step by step procedure but it's pretty straight forward.

Just to add to the list of things to do, have the battery tested....

It's free and it worked on my Sebring. It was acting just as you said up above. Took it to Sears and put in a new Diehard, no more problems.

My 1999 durango will only start if it is 95 plus degrees outside. I have had it to two garages and they cn't diagnose problem. When it does start there is comunication with cp but no computer codes. When it won't it doesn't register any fuel but turns over (battery ok) and no comunication with computer. One garages said it was the anti theft module, and one said power train control module. about 850 $ for a guess. Please help.
