I had to fill up the gas tank, as Dakota owners do most often. I pulled up (luckily on the right side since my parent's GMC is on the right I took a guess). I reach under the dash and could not find the tank release, got out looked under there and could not find it! Where is that damn thing!? Looked in owners manual...nope, nothing in there either! So I kinda sat there, trying not to make people wonder what in the hell I was doing. Then it hit me like a ton a bricks...maybe.

OH! It doesn't have one, oops. I was humbled by my truck yesterday...damn.

The first time I filled up my Dak I did something really stupid. I went into the gas station paid for gas and then left. I forgot to fill it up. I still get teased when ever I go in there.

I always loved the way my 71 Plymouth's gas tank was set up. Not only behind the rear axle and centered for best traction, but cap hidden behind rear plate. It didn't matter what side you pulled up on, and gave the car cleaner lines. It must have been determined to be some kind of fire hazard in an accident as I have not seen anything built that way for some time.

It still cracks me up on everyone sueing over "gas tank hazards" when in the early '50s trucks, the tanks were often IN THE CAB.

Okay, I feel embarassed to admit this... I bought a locking gas cap and lost the key. I was on empty when I discovered this and had to take it to the dealership (praying the whole way that I didn't run out of gas) and have them saw it off. Doh!

Lesley, that actually crossed my mind! I wanted a locking one... "but what if I can't find the key or worse, loose it." I did think the Dakota would come with one, the old '90 4Runner I used to drive had one and so do all the Z71s I've been in. I can't remember if Taco's have them, but I think it should, it's a 2002 for god's sakes, this gas cap locking idea is not new! Aww well.

Ummm, by my calculations, my truck was 2 years old when I bought the locking gas cap... it being a 97 - that was 1999. Was that before your time?
Sorry Dave, I'm not a 12 year old girl either, so I guess that DOES make me an old fart.
