Subject: Help with tires!

Hi all,

I have a 2001 R/T that currently has Goodyear performance tires size 255/55/17. Apparently that size is no longer available. What I really need is a good all terrain tire, especially one good on snow should the need arise. Anyone know what's available out there? Do I need to change rim size as well? Tire stores seem to be baffled by this so hopefully someone here has some good news for me. I will be commuting to a new college course and during winter, I will more than likely need 4wd. Since obviously the Dakota doesn't have that, I need some good tires that are better than the old worn out slick performance tires I have on now lol I really don't want to sell my baby, even if it is getting up in the years! Thanks in advance

That size is available - TireRack lists three
different brands.

That size is not available inexpensively, but then
again, all three that TireRack lists are higher
end brands.

You may need to find another size that'll fit.
I'm sure you can find some 17" that are about the
same OD total (maybe a 245/60/17?) OTOH, shifting
to a 18" wheel will enable a few more choices.
OTGH, getting your speedometer corrected will
allow you to use a tire with a different OD
anyway.

I love tire rack... especially for their surveys. Usually here in NJ, the tires arrive the next day.

Yes, Goodyear made those 17 inch tires just for the
RT. My 1998 handled great with them but was horrid
in the snow. I got some 16 inch take-offs from a
Durango, wheels and tires which still had all the
nubs on the tread for $600. Speedometer is off about
11 mph at 60 but I've adapted otherwise. Much better
in snow and rain.
