Subject: My truck is freaking out! IP: Logged
Message: This is a long one: So, my father-in-law gave me his 2005
Dakota. About 2 weeks later, the panel lights started flashing
on and off. The check engine and oil light would flash, then
the brake and ABS light... it started off just doing it
occasionally, then after a day or so it became a constant
issue. After a few more days, the PRNDL indicator wouldn't
move from P until I started moving. Then the truck would die
after starting up unless I gave it some gas. Then, it wouldn't
even turn over, and the PRNDL doesn't show up at all. I had it
towed to a service center, where they informed me that I had
some loose ground wires, needed a new battery, and there
was a lot of corrosion. They replaced the battery and battery
wires, and some of the wires to the PCM. Problem solved...
until 2 weeks later, the problem came back. I returned it to
the service center, they "fixed" it again (this time for free) and
I drove home. Then the problem started again the very next
day. Not having money to take it in again, I just dealt with the
constant flashing and dinging. But, it finally got to the point
where it wont start again. I called the mechanic, and he has
no idea what is causing it... Is it possible thy my PCM has
gone bad? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks.

Message: My opinion, you got either serious wiring issues or the PCM is bad. First, I would disconnect the battery, then disconnect all the connections from the PCM taking care where each one is connected. Then get a can of contact cleaner and clean both sides of the connectors really well. Then put dielectric grease on both connectors, reconnec them and see if it fires up. You may want to check for any stored codes before you disconnect the battery.

Message: Was this rig by chance under water at some point? I sounds like you may be seeing signs of a vehicle that got flooded...literally. Lots of times problems don't arise until years later. Any unusual stains or corrosion on various wire connectors that normally wouldn't see corrosion...like under the dash? any silt under the carpet etc?

Message: Thanks guys. This truck is definitely never been underwater.
My father in law bought it brand new. They were definitely
corrosion issues. This truck spent most of its life so far in
Michigan. When I had written the original post, it was sitting
in my driveway, and it wouldn't start. It wouldn't even turn
over. Last Sunday, on a whim, I got in and try to start it, and it
started right up. I drove it to work Tuesday morning, with all
the dash lights freaking out the whole way, and then it
wouldn't start again when it was time to leave work. All week
long, at every break and before and after work, I would get in
and try to start it. It wouldn't even turn over. Today after
work, I got in and it started right up. I drove it home and
there were no problems. Well, I will try cleaning all of the
connectors to the PCM soon.
