Subject: Tricky Ignition Problem

Message:
I'm having a tricky ignition problem on my 1999 / 5.2 / 4x4 Dakota: I was driving down the highway while pulling my 6x10 trailer, I heard a bunch of misfires and then it died. Now it won't start.

I have good fuel pressure. The injector circuits are able to flash my test lamps. And I can smell gas, so I'm assuming my issue isn't fuel.

I have good strong spark up to the distributor (checked with a spark plug at the distributor end of the wire), but no spark down any of the plug wires. I replaced the cap, rotor and distributor pickup (aka cam position sensor), but the problem remains. The distributor turns when the engine is cranked, and seems otherwise engaged to the cam. The only thing that I can think of is to change our the crankshaft position sensor.

Am I missing something?

I should also mention that there are no codes from engine computer and the check engine light is not on. Battery is fully charged.

I'm about to change out the crankshaft position sensor. Hopefully that fixes it, since the only other thing I can think of is that the timing chain jumped and the rotor no longer lines up with the distributor cap when the coil fires.

Changed the crank sensor, and I still have no spark past the center tap on the distributor.

Somebody want to try to talk me out of changing the timing chain?

Actually, the manual says I can check if the chain has jumped by turning the crank to TDC and then making sure the rotor is pointed exactly towards the #1 mark inside the distributor.

A person on another board suggested that even though I have spark up to the center tap of distributor, checking with a spark plug would not prove that the coil wasn't weak. I picked up an adjustable spark tester.

My coil could only spark across a gap of about 1/16th inch . . . my new coil can jump spark across well over 1/2 inch. The truck fired right up with the new coil. I've never experienced a coil fail suddenly like this. I replaced this coil in the spring and was warned against using a "auto parts store coil". I'm told the the OE coil is made for Chrysler by Delphi, they're much more spendy, by I'm going to order up one as a spare for my four Dakotas.
