Run a 12 ga wire from the battery + to the black wire on the controller. Use a 20 amp circuit breaker in this wire, as close to the battery end as possible. Connect the red wire to the cold side of the brakelight switch at the top of the brake pedal. (I think the wire is white with a tan tracer)
The white wire goes to a GOOD ground. and then the blue runs back to the plug. on a 7 pole plug it connects to the one marked "blue", on a 6 pole plug it goes on the terminal marked "s".

I thought by 2001 if a rig came with the factory tow package, then they were coming pre-wired...it should have a 'pig'tail' somewhere under the dash that the brake controller simply plugs into. You may have to purchase an adapter specific to your vehicle from Reese, but it shouldn't be any harder than that.

If the tow package is installed there is a blue or white 4 wire plug on the back side of the wire harness as it comes thru the firewall above the driver's left foot. My Dakota has the tow package, but only the hitch, no wiring connector. Maybe it was a dealer install. You can either get a connector harness or clip off the connector and hard wire it. The wires may not match the color code on the controller. The two fat wires are +12v, and output to plug. The skinny ones are brake signal (white/ brown has power when pedal is depressed) and the ground. A test light or voltmeter will verify.

Jeeze...must I do everything? Okay, follow me.

If you have the factory wiring for a brake controller, just like installing an aftermarket radio, all you need is an adapter harness...

Search the web for 'Reese brake controller / 2003 Dakota' and it will show you an adapter harness listed under multiple sites.

You simply plug it into the end in your rig, then attach the wires to the controller per the directions...no cutting or splicing into the factory wiring.

Hope this helps.
