Subject: The best brand of shocks? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 Dakota 2wd club cab. Its time to replace the
shocks and I'm wondering what brand and type is best for
mostly around town driving. Thanks

Message: Gabriel is garbage. Look what happened to mine after only 4 years and 65K miles:

I was able to crush the housing with my hand with no effort. Go with the KYBs.

Message: Bob,
By looking at the other corrosion photos on your site, I would guess it's more of the environment you operate your rig in rather than the mfg of the shock you used...unless you have more than 4 yrs on a set of KYBs and they have fared much better.

Message: Well, let's put it this way:
Drove a 66 Plymouth with original shocks to 1983 before I sold it.
Drove a 72 Dart from 1982 to 1985 with original shocks before I sold it.
Drove an 85 Daytona from 1985 to 1991 with original shocks before I sold it.
Drove a 92 Daytona from 1992 to 2002 (196K miles) with original shocks before I replaced them with these. They were rotted through within 4 years. I replaced them with KYBs and they were fine when I sold the car 2 years and 35K miles later.
Driving a 92 Dakota from 2004 to present with original shocks, and only now are they showing surface rust, but not rotted like this.
All of these vehicles were driven in MA, all exposed to the same environment. The Gabriels were the only ones I ever bought from them, and the only ones out of all these vehicles that rotted like this, and so fast. None of my friends, who have lived and driven here all their lives, have ever seen anything like it.
I think that points out clearly where the problem lies.

Message: I agree with Bob Lincoln. I thought I was doing myself a favor by replacing the OEM fronts on my 02 4x4 DAK 2 years ago with Rancho 9000 shocks. We'll I've had 4 sheared shock bolts in those 2 years. 1 mechanic melted my CV boot trying to extract one. I think these high end shocks are too stout for the DAK and put too much shear stress on the bolts. Just replaced them out for OEM Monroe's. Worst decision I ever made to get the Rancho's.>>>AJ

Message: I have had the same Trailmaster SSVs (came with the lift kit) on my `95 since `03 and all seems well. Those 9000s must have some serious dampening if that is what caused the bolts to shear. I would think you would have felt a noticable ride difference if they were that stiff.
