Subject: PCV valve IP: Logged
Message: I've had a problem with my 96' dakota 3.9 V6 wanting to stall out. I starts fine when cold, but after being run, and left sit for maybe 30 mins. or so, it will start, but wants to stall. If I get it moving and get going, then it runs fine, but I have found that if I remove the hose from the PCV at the intake port, it imediately runs better and won't stall. I replaced the PCV, cleaned the hose, and made sure the port was open, and this has helped it from stalling, but it still happens from time to time. It also still idles better without the hose hooked up. Anyone run into this before/also?

Message: To try and explain this quickly and easy. Start by
checking for codes even if the light isn't on.
(system may still have stored codes)
The problem may not be the PCV at all, It could be
the engine running rich. By removing the hose you
are allowing more air into the system and leans it
out.

Message: Wouldn't the air mixing with the fuel mixture be coming in through the air cleaner? not this valve which is pulling air through the engine?

Message: Lets clarify this. You replaced the PCV valve and cleaned which hose? Both? Because there's a hose for air intake to the crankcase and a hose from PCV to manifold vacuum. Check the condition of both.
And did you clean or replace the breather filter at the intake to the crankcase?

Message: I cleaned the PCV hose, not sure were the other hose you mentioned or the breather filter is located.

Message: On the V-6, you have the PCV valve and its hose coming out of one valve cover and the hose goes to the intake manifold. On the other side of the engine is a hose from the air cleaner to the breather filter, which is a metal canister that snaps into a rubber grommet on the other valve cover. It serves as the air filter for the incoming air to the crankcase, and has a metal mesh inside it. This should be cleaned or replaced at regular intervals. If it's clogged, the PCV valve is trying to pull a vacuum in the crankcase and cannot function properly. If I recall correctly, the PCV valve is on the passenger side, breather filter on the driver's side.

Message: I cleaned the breather filter, which wasn't really dirty, checked that hose, which was fine and still having the same problem as in my first post
