Subject: Problem and Fix - No headlights/wipers IP: Logged
Message: Just sharing my experience with a problem.
Truck Info
2002 Dodge Dakota SLT Club
4.7 V8, 4x2, 161000 miles.
Headlights wouldn't turn on, wiper delay wouldn't work (full on wipers still worked), interior lights wouldn't light up, power locks wouldn't function.
After some investigation the culprit of these problems occurring at the same time led me to the CTM module (this is the term used by dealerships). This module was confirmed to be bad by my private mechanic who was unable to communicate with the module with his programming computer.
FIX -
Locate the module in your vehicle. For Dakotas this is located behind the drivers side kick panel. Remove the door sill trim, then pry off the kick panel trim. These two items are held in with compression clamps and can be pried off using your hands. Unclip the 3 connectors on the face of the unit (don't worry about the order, they are unique to the sockets and can't be mixed up). Unscrew the old unit from the wall (3 screws) and pull gently to break it free of the clamps. Replace with a new CTM module, plug in the connectors and you your truck will function as normal.
A new CTM module from a dealership (no aftermarket available) will cost you either $ 109.00 for a older version (these are getting harder to find).... or for $ 325.00 for a newer version (these are still quite common).
Be sure to write down your part number prior to purchasing, and have the parts counter guy cross reference your number with the new one to make sure they are compatible.
** NOTE **
Your Keyless Entry (Keyfob) will not work with the new module until it is reprogrammed. The dealership charges $150+ for this, some quoted me as much as $250! Thankfully this is something you can do outside of the dealership, most private mechanics know someone who can program these things, mine has a guy that will do it for $75. Its you call if you think its worth the hassle.
These units go bad from water damage, or just from age, it doesn't need a reason at all sometimes. IF the unit goes bad when you are driving with your lights on, these lights may stay on even after the vehicle is parked and the key is out of ignition. This can only be fixed by disconnecting the battery. You will not be able to turn your lights back on again though.
I hope this helps someone one day, and I want to thank you guys for sharing your experiences as well, this board has solved a couple of problems for me in the past, so I felt it was time to give back. Please pardon me if this sorta thing has been posted before.
