I recently got a rebuilt transmission for my 3.9L 98 Dakota (AX-15). The rebuilder told me I can use Dextron III ATF in it. Has anyone used this? Is it safe? I know some GMs use Dextron III in their MTX

Some FWD manual transmissions used ATF in the early to mid-1980s, but they then switched to 5W-30 engine oil. I'd try to find an owner's manual or factory service manual for your setup.
