Subject: Front disk warping problems? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dakota SLT 2W/D.
At 94,000, I began to feeling 'pulsing' on the brake pedal when braking. I also noticed a heavy sediment of brake pad 'dust' forming on both front wheels.
I took it in to a dealer shop for diagnosis and repair. Both discs were indeed warped and un-salvageable (they apparently had been turned more than once!), so I replaced them as well as the pads.
That was less than 10,000 miles ago, and I am having the same symptoms again (pulsing, brake pad dust).
I have a notion that this must be a common issue with those discs and/or assembly.
Please let me hear from those of you who have "been there-done that", so I can understand more about this issue.
I have not yet contacted the dealer that did the did the repair, but I plan to...I just don't expect any satisfaction from them!
Now that I am more familiar with my truck and do not have money to burn, I will do my own repair this time!

Message: I changed my pads and rotors for the first time at 80k. The reason I changed the rotors becaused they had just worn out. i bought the cheapest rotors and miccle of the road pads from autozone and have never looked back. Never ahd any problems at all with pulsing or warping. My '00 QC nos has 145k on it annd the brakes still work like new. One thing a lot of poeple overlook is "bedding in" the new pads after they are installed.
Here is some good reading:

Enjoy.

Message: madprinter, make sure you don't over tighten your wheels when you install them. This can actually warp the rotors. Always use a torque wrench. If a tire shop or repair shop installs your wheels, insist that they torque them to proper specs. I've seen kids in gas stations tightening lug nuts with impact guns until they stop turning. Instant problem.

Message: The caliper hoses should be replaced, Age and miles
cause them to swell and hold pressure & over heat
the brakes.

Message: Daddio, once again thanks again for your assistance. You're a faithful assistant here!
Last night I discovered the link to the tech article you shared and suggested, and read it thoroughly. What a great lesson for me. I have not yet pulled the wheels to investigate, but after what I learned the rotors are probably not warped and are fine!
Unfortunate that the dealer did not educate me about bedding. I will know more when I inspect.
Today I realized that there was no pulsing at all. It is no where as bad as it was when I had the problem before, just intermittent. My main concern now is the amount of pad dust that accumulates on the wheels (only the front wheels with disc brakes). Crappie pads possibly???
Like I said, I'll know more after I have a looksie!
I will post and report what I discover.
Thanks, also, Cap and Curly for your response...also good information :-)

Message: You're welcome. And yes, inexpensive semi-mettalic pads will cause quite a bit of brake dust.
