So I've replaced my pump 5 times in the last month. I own an 01 dodge dakota 4X4 w/ a manual trans. the pump doesnt whine but it's incredibly hard to turn the wheel. once you rev the truck to 1500RPM it frees up. any directions anyone can point me in? there are not many parts to teh system. 2 hoses, the pump, and the rack and pinion. could it be the rack? and how does a rack and pinion go out other than starting to leak?

Did you flush the system? Old PS fluid is full of grit and nasty stuff. I believe a rack can leak internally. Internal seals can be worn and fluid can get past them, making the system fight itself. I;d say your rack is bad, but make sure you flush all the hoses. It is also possible an old hose is fallign apart on the inside and bits of rubber are cloggig up your system. I woudl actually chek that first since it's the cheaper fix. Those hoses are 10 years old if they are trhe originals. Pull them off clean them out, see if you can see any internal damage.

I have a 2000, 4.7 liter 4x4 and have used lucas power steering fluid/conditioner in my unit with no problems.

I took a turkey baster, sucked out the old fluid, refilled and did the same a couple of days later.

The old fluid looked pretty bad. I plan on doing that every 20k miles or so.

I have flushed the fluid. Actually lifted the front end up, puledl the return line off the resivour on multiple occasions, and just rotated the the wheel back and forth. Of course the truck wasn't running while I did this. what puzzles me is at 1500 RPM and aboue I have no problems at all w/ it. I'll pull the lines tonight and get back to everyone.

Check the diameter of your pulley. If memory serves me, there are two different diameter pulleys used on the p/w pumps.

you are right daddio there are two different size diameter on the pumps but it's only on the shaft commin from the pump. the pullies are the same size. it's a crazy deal. i dealt w/ it years ago. acutally had to have a guy machine out the one pully for me. my guess is probably an internal leak in the rack. it feels like your tire is up against a parking block/ curb and then it frees right up. i'm pullin the hoses off in a few hours so I'll see if they are swollen.

I agree, it sounds like the rack is whipped. I've having a similar problem with my 94. When at idle the steering is weak, when turning the wheel when parked it shudders a bit. I'm gogin to replace the whole system though regardless of what is bad since everythign is 17 years old.
