Subject: Need info on the 4x4 system in Daks....

Is it a Dana axle setup? If so what size ring gear? I am afraid of these independent front drive axles in the smaller trucks because when you add four wheeling, bigger tires and tough terrain your usually asking for alot of trouble. Also what model is the T-case behind the 4.7 and 5.9 and how much abuse will that take as well.
Thanks,
Bryan

Hello Bryan,

I belive it is a Dana 30 front and rear. Also just a heads up and I could be the exception. Inspect your T case. There was a flaw in mine and it cracked after a day of wheeling. They replaced it no problem but since I inspect it when I change my oil. Just pairinoid I guess. I don't want to be in the middle of no where and loose my tcase. Besides it does very well wheeling. I have the club cab 4.7 limited slip in the rear and 3.93 gears. I am pleased with its capability. Trust me I wheel often as well. I did Posion Spider in Moab with out a problem. That would be the toughest trail I would do stock. Due to clearance.

Dakotas use the Chrysler 8.25" in the rear and 7.25" up front not Danas unless they have switched from 95. There is a tag under the hood that tells what size axles the vehicle has. My 95 has a NP (now NV)231D which is a very common and reliable transfer case. It is rated for over 1900 ft/lbs of torque.

If you are a hard core 4-wheeler, then I assume you will put in all HD off-road stuff like 31-spline axle shafts, 1350 U-joints, T-case slip-yoke eliminators which means it shouldn't matter what comes on a Dakota anyway.

Stock has its limitations so don't plan on routinely abusing your truck without it breaking.

Some apparent contradictions in mags
IP: Logged

Message:
I have found two articles in two differant off road mags that I have. One says it has the 9.25 inch rear, same as the ram 1500 and a dana 30 in front, the other says it has the 8.25 rear and a Dana 35 in front. Are there parts to upgrade the front end of the Daks like posi's, gears, heavier duty axles, joints and such? If so who sells them? When I get my truck I want to upgrade as much as possible to fix potential areas before they break. Like I said I dont wheel hard but like the peace of mind. Also what does anybody know about the autos that come behind the 4.7? Doe they have the duribilty issues of the 46RE behind the 5.9? Little info is out there on these. Will they take reasonably hard use on and off road as long as they are prudently maintained? A issue of HOT ROD last year had an aticle on the DAK R/T who spoke with a Chrysler insider who said that the R/T is at about the limit of the 46RE tranny and that there is or was a silent recall for them. I want the most durable possible setup.
Thanks all for reading and responding to my questions
Bryan

Dakota's pre 96' have a 8.25 rear, and 7.25 front. lockright makes a locker for the rear. There is currently nothing available for the front. If you are having problems breaking the front axles, and spiders like I am. Here is my suggestion. I've had to have my axles, and spiders dipped. This is were they freeze the metal with liquid nitrogen then slowly bring it up to temp. then they cure it so it is back to its orignal britalness. It is usually about twice its orignal strengh.
