Has anyone put 17 x 9 R/T wheels on a GEN I I have a 1994. The rear fits fine with 10" wide tires, but the front rub. Does anyone know what tire size will fit on the front? Do I need to add wheel spacers? I want to lower the front 2" and make these wheels work.

mark,

You left out a lot of detail. Try answering these questions in your next post and someone may be able to 'steer' you in the right direction.

Where do they rub? (Frame? Wheel opening? Front or back?)
When do they rub? (when fully turned...while stopped or when moving? When you hit a bump?)
What tire size is currently on the rim? (width? Sidewall height?)

I bought a set of used R/T wheels and they have 255 60 17's on them. The rim itself hits the control arm at full lock, and the tires rub on the frame front and back. obviously these tires won't work but they came on the rims. My question was more intended to tap into anyone else's experience who may have done this. I was curious to know if anyone had done it, what size tire they are running. They rub on the upper control arm is minor and I believe I can do some light grinding on it to relieve the problem. and I believe adding wheel spacers will help. But I hate to put more pressure on the outboard bearing. I am picking up a set of used 225 45 17's and trying them out.

Sounds like the wheels have quite a bit of offset towards the inside. If that is true, you should be fine with the addition of wheel spacers...they are basically mimicing what changing to a wheel with a different offset.

If the studs are long enough, try loading up a 1/4", 1/2"...etc. of washers on every other stud, then mount the wheel and see how much it helps. DON"T DRIVE IT LIKE THIS, but you could check it statically. A handfull of washers would cost much less than the wrong size spacer. As long as you can get a few full turns on the lug nuts this should be okay...in the driveway. Maybe it would at least get you a bit closer to knowing exactly what you need? Just me thinking outloud.

Good luck.

I recommend 1" spacers, considering that the r/t's came out in 97 with a wider axle. 2" wider to be exact. So 1" spacers on each side should be enough.

Hey Thanks guys. I was thinking of the washer trick. The offset is approx 1-1/4" more versus factory wheels. They look great on the truck. I mounted them and did some very light grinding onthe control arm and they now will go lock to lock without rubbing I bought some used 235-45 17's just for fiting purposes, and they work, but look stupid. The sidewalls are too short and the tread is narrower than the rim. I think If I put 2" drop spindles on the front end all will work out and I can go to a 245 or 255 tire. If I have to notch the frame a little I will. Then again, I am learning there are a lot more 6 lug wheels available now compared to when I was playing with the truck back in the laste 90's. If I have to buy $300 worth of spacers... geez, how bad do I want the R/T wheels. I paid 450 for the wheels, I could easily get that back, and buy new wheels that fit without more work. Anyone wanna buy a set of R/T wheels?
