Subject: Left Front Pad Wear
IP: Logged

Message:
On my 1998 Dakota, the left front pads wear out after only about 10k miles. I am considering rebuilding the caliper but don't want to waste my money if it might be something else. Is there something else in the system that would cause only the left front pads to wear out so quickly?

A restriction in the brake flex hose can sometimes cause the brakes to drag. Then it acts as a one-way valve and doesn't allow the fluid back to release the pads. Normally you can smell and feel it.

Could also be a stuck caliper piston, or rusted caliper guide pins that prevent slide action.

I do not notice any drag or smell any brake, but then again the windows are usually up.

I went ahead and ordered a caliper rebuild kit and will do a thorough check on the hose and guide pins. Though if the guide pins were sticking I would think that the pad wear would be uneven, which is not the case.

Your problem may lie with the caliper and hose on the right side. If the caliper is stuck or the hose is plugged then the caliper on that side may not be working. That would mean the left side is doing all the stopping, causing the premature wear.

Daddio,

That would make sense if there was a pulling to the left side, however there is no pulling at all when I brake. I can take my hands off the wheel and the truck stops straight. I thought about that too.

What about checking the runout on that left rotor? Do you get any pulsation in the pedal when applying the brakes?

If the left caliper was hanging up it would pull to the left all the time braking or not.

what about the left wheel bearing? You getting any noise from that area?

I had either flex hose or caliper sticking (not sure which since I replaced everything, it was all so rusty, and the lines rusted out). There was no dragging or pulling to one side at all, but one pad on the right side was down to the metal.
