Message: I have a 1991 2WD short bed with ~170,000 miles. Looks good, runs good, and has had great maintainance. Being white, the paint is like new.
The only issue is oil consumption, 1 quart every 500 miles, nearly all of which appears to be leakage from both front and rear engine seals. Cylinder compression is down a bit, but that's not a cold morning starting issue at this time. The engine has never been opened, for anything.
Since it is in great shape I want to keep it for another 100,000 miles. What should be the plan for the engine when I can't stand the leaks anymore? Open it up and reseal it, and maybe do a valve job? Does the timing chain ever need to be replaced as a preventative measure? Anything else to be considered?

So am I! GenII design is for the ages.
IMHO Dodge/MBZ made big mistake by changing the Dakota to the "Brute" design of the RAM, not to even mention the deterioration of quality. A broad spectrum of people, including little old ladies are seen happily driving GenII around, but they wouldn't touch a GenIII.

Message: Aaaggh! Had my 4x4 1991 v6 stick in for alignment today and he screwed it up! Drove absolutely GREAT going in except for some wheel play. After alignment it now doesn't know where the middle of the road is and doesn't want to return after even a small steering adjustment.
He loosened up the steering box a bit, which helped a tiny bit, but that made the wheel play worse. Aaaggh!
We checked the Hunter printout and he had reduced the caster from 1/2 degree over spec (where it steered GREAT), back to the top edge of spec, where it doesn't. No good! Tomorrow he is going to put the caster back out of spec so I hope that solves the problem.
Any wise advice for me to take along???

Message: Yeah, I would take a GenI over a GenIII any day. My Dakota is the first car I have ever owned. Had it since I was 16. Something nostalgic about GenI's that I just don't feel for the GenIII's. Nothing against the GenIII body style of course! I like those too. But I wouldn't trade my GenI for anything (not even a Viper, if you can believe that!)

Message: 2WD, You got a KILLER price for youre repairs. And I agree, the gen 2 trucks were the best. It's blatantly obvious to anyone who spends time on this site that the the GEN 3 trucks suffer from serious quality/reliability issues. When my 95 v6 finally goes, I,m putting a new engine in it. 120,000miles and only 2 major repairs, clutch, fuelpump. not only are the gen 3's POS, but they are too damn expensive!! leave it to D.C. to screw up a good thing.

Message: I am SO VERY VAIN...I can't help it. I regularly park my gen3 next to a gen2 at work. I then walk away and take a good look. Yup, looks like a Mazda B2000 next to a DODGE. The guy with the gen2 speaks just as you do concerning the reliability of his truck, all the while salivating over mine!
To be absolutely truthful, I never even NOTICED Dakotas before the gen3 appeared.
I can totally respect the love you have for the early generations, but give the gen3 a break!

I own 2 GenIIs but really do like much about the Gen3. The Gen3 rides great, but has a bold look which appeals to a narrower market. I think in changing the look the Dakota lost it's "Classic" appeal which attracted a wider range of drivers. For example: you don't see many older ladies driving the Gen3, but see many comfortably driving a Gen2 to the store.
Until DC gets its mechanical act together I'll just keep driving the beautiful GenIIs. Wonder how many GenIIIs will routinely go hundreds of thousands of miles with only minor repairs? Seems like they do break a lot...

Message: LMAO. No problem. If the 4.7 goes to hell, I'll come steal your v6 with 240,000 on it. Leave the maintenance records on the seat for me!!
Narrower market? Yes. Everywhere you turn there's another head turning wannabee Ram. (around here, anyway) I'd much rather drive something that my Grandma would be afraid of.
Oh well, we all love our trucks for different reasons. That's the point, at least we care enough about them to defend them!

LOL. Yes, Mom told me it isn't nice to steal. She threatens to steal my truck from me all the time, so I should do as she says not as she threatens. LOL!
Take care of that truck of yours, it has obviously taken good care of you.

It's all luck of the draw.
My GenIII is looking at almost 200K miles.
Know what I've had to replace so far?
A catalytic converter.
7 years.
one part.
I'll stick with my GenIII.
