Message: I'm looking at this dodge dakota on craigslist,
I'm 16, and this would be my first car. ( my dads
a mechanic so anything wrong mechanically me and
him can fix, so the trans isn't a problem)
How dependable are these years of dakotas, It's a
3.9 V6, 4X4.
Is there anything about them i should know before
buying them that seems to go out alot?
This is the add,
i have a 1992 dodge dakota 4x4 lifted 6in the
trucks runs an drives ok it does great in the mud
and the 4x4 works good the truck does have some
rust but still looks ok the tires on the truck
have about 85% life left and are 32-11.5-15 but
you can fit 35s the bad with the truck is it has
some rust and 4th gear is out on the truck but i
have extra trans to go with the truck just no time
to put it in now for the good the truck has a
crash bar an kc lights an good tires i drive the
trcuk to work an back i only work 10min away the
truck dose have 177,000 an will go up
i would like to sell for 1400 or trade for quad or
dirt bike must be 95 or newer or a gas saver
Here are pics of it:

Do you think it's worth the price?
Is there anything you see wrong with the truck to
make me think it's not worth fixing up and being a
good truck and daily driver/ mudder?
If i don't get this i'm probably going to fix up a
jeep with a 5.2 V8, But i'd rather go for this as
it gets a bit better gas mileage, and i prefer
trucks anyways.

Message: At a 177K miles, if the front steering and suspension components have not been replaced (recently), you can bet the farm it all needs to be done. With that kind of wheel off-set ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman & idler arms just don't last that long (voice of experience). Doing the work yourself, you can figure $300 - $500.
A V-6 pulling 6"s of lift with that tire wheel combo is NOT going to get any gas mileage to speak of.
What does your state say about those tires sticking out that far? Could you even get it registered without changing the tire wheel combo?
Just things to think about.

In michigan it seems like you can drive anything
with wheels and get away with it.

Message: I would say no, I called a guy locally (NW Indiana), he is selling a 99 with 113k 4x4 ext cab auto with no issues for 1400...just needs an exhaust. That price for a 92 is too high.

Message: It has a 6IN Lift, which is close to $1800 new
now, And it comes with another trans, me and my
dad can install that in a day so it's not a
problem.
I Think it's a decent deal, but thanks for the opinions everyone!
Oh and another thing, It seems like all dodge Dakota's seem to get close to the same mileage
with this V6 Versus a Durango w/ a v8. Why is
this?

It's a post from this month, so prices can't be that
off.

Message: Personally I would do a solid axle swap and spend less then 1800 and use a newer platform.
The reason v8 dakota's usually match or get better mileage then the v6 is that the v6 has to work a lot harder to pull the truck around. Neither of which are stellar on mileage but will last a long time and run good.

Message: Josh,
That is a ballpark 'guestimate'. If you Google "1992 Dodge dakota Trailmaster suspension lift" you will likely find them even more than $1,800. That being said, if you were buying this rig to part it out or rob the lift kit, then yes...it's a good deal, but with the wear this probably has, it just doesn't have much value. I'm not knocking the guys rig, just being realistic. You don't want your first vehicle constantly tapping your wallet, just to keep it on the road.

Message: From my experience resurecting dead Dakotas, sell the big a$$ mud tires and get some practical street tires. Sell the lift for whatever you talk the guy into selling the whole truck for, then replace the trans. Using the leftover money, buy some front end parts and do a basic tune up. You'll have a dependable ride that'll last 300k or more and might even have some $$$ left over to fill up the tank. Basiclly, buy the truck for $1,000, sell the off road stuff for $2,000. You just got a free truck and $1000 to fix it up with. You will end up better off that way.

Message: If i was going to buy this truck, the only reason i
would have bought it was for the off roading
capabilities, which probably isn't much.
i'm probably just going to keep driving the car i
drive now, and save up enough to either buy a 94-99
body style type dodge 2500 with a cummins in it.
