Message:
I will try to make this short and sweet. My PU is
a 2000 2wd Dak w/4.7l. I left my shop this
afternoon and about 2 miles into the drive I was
on the freeway and when I pressed on the gas the
truck bogged down badly and sounded EXTREMELY
muffled. By the time I was able to get off of the
freeway I was only able to go about 40 mph. The
truck will no longer rev over say 1800-2000 rpms
without shaking and it has NO POWER. There are no
check engine codes at all as I checked them with
my scanner and the factory on-off-on-off-on
scenario. After sitting for 3 hours waiting for
the tow truck and getting it home, I fired it up
and it sounds pretty much back to normal now but
still a little off. My initial thoughts were that
the TPS took a dump, but could this be the case
without a check engine light/code?? I know that
the fuel filters in these are "Lifetime" filters
but has anyone had their filter get clogged and
had to go through the process of replacing their
pump/filter?? And help would be appreciated here
since there are no diagnostic codes for me to go
off of. Thanks!!

I should also add that once this happened and I
got off the road, every 30 minutes or so while I
was waiting for the tow truck I would start the
truck up just to see what it was doing. The first
time I did this it wouldnt hardly rev at all,
maybe 1500-1800 rpm. The next time it got a little
higher and so on and so fourth. The last time I
tried this before the truck go there I was able to
rev it up to about 2500 or so even though it still
sounded like it was super muffled or choked. So
with time the problem either got better due to the
time passed or the fact that the truck was cooling
down. Can a TPS exhibit this behavior?? Can it get
warm and fail completely and then cool down and
act almost totally normal???

So much for short an sweet eh?

but anyway How many miles on this truck?
could be 101 things, could also be early signs of
fuel pump failure

I doubt it is your TPS sensor, the computer checks the tps with the MAP sensor, it would throw a code if they weren't matching up. I would guess you are either not getting fuel(check the fuel pressure) or you could have a bad cam position sensor or crank position sensor.

YEah sorry, it got out of hand! My truck just broke
90k last week. The more I think about it the more I
am leaning towards a pump/filter. I have had a few
different vehicles i the past have filters that got
clogged and they act the same way, run fime and then
worse and worse until they run barely or not at all.
Come back in an hour or so and the screens clear of
sediment and they run fine again. Could the Cam or
Crank Pos sensor fail based on temp/duration like
that?

Test you fuel pressure, then check the catcon. Tap around on it and listen for a sound like rocks in a can.

OK as daddio said check the cat converter also.
With it cold bang on it with the side of a fist.

Then for the fuel pump, A pressure gauge on the
schrader valve located on the fuel rail.
(looks like a tire valve stem)

If you don't have the pressure gauge check your
local large chain parts stores for a tool loaner
program.

My thoughts are a fuel pressure issue but hard to
narrow it down without having the truck in front
of me.

Give us an update.

So heres an update. I got a hold of a fuel pressure
gauge and it checks out perfect upon startup, 49psi
at idle. So my next step was to drive around the
neighborhood until it started acting up again so
that I could check it when it was warm to see if
there was a variance. So I drove off and right when
I got around the corner the truck was stumbling
already, just not as bad, so I thought sweet this
wont take long. Well, the stumbling ended up
stopping and I drove almost 20 miles with the truck
in 2nd to keep the revs up and try to starve the PU
for fuel. Never once stumbled after the first mile
or so.

So I have pretty much narrowed it down to a fuel
issue, either a filter that somehow got some
sediment and freed itself or a pump that is going
bad. My money seems to be on a filter issue with how
it reacted the other day. I wouldnt think it was a
bad gas issue as I JUST filled my tank the day
before and I only EVER use Chevron Supreme. I know
if the filter is bad, the pumps gotta get changed
anyways. Anyone have any other ideas?? Still no
check engine lights. If it doesn't act up again
tomorrow I am going to put the performance program
back into the computer and see if it makes a
difference for any reason.

Certain years had an inline filter. Look underneath
running along the chassis right about under the seat
location. This also makes sense as a fuel pressure
issues is not likely to trip the light unless/untill
you got a very lean condition.

If it comes down to replacing the pump removing the
bed and sliding it back is the best bet. Eight bolts
and all your wires (tail lights) have plugs at the
harness underneath.

Up to 1994 it had an external filter on the left frame rail by the tank.

So another update. My PU was running great this
morning with no problems. Went to leave the shop and
it wouldnt start! After cranking for about 7-10
seconds I threw a P0340 Cam Sensor code. I am
running out to grab a new one right now. Could this
have been the issue all along?? As 02dak4.7 said in
the very beginning??

Not sure why my last post posted twice! Anyways, so
I got the new sensor and installed it and the truck
started! Hopefully that was the only issue. I really
appreciate all your help! Sure would have been nice
if the code had popped up in the first place!

So an update, as I stated I replaced the Cam
sensor and the truck has been running great ever
since but I am noticing a weird issue now since
then. When ever I get on the accelerator hard it
doesnt sound angry like it did before the other
issue. The truck runs and idles great but when I
really get on it, it sounds muffled (I have had a
flowmaster on the truck for like 7 years now and
it used to sound great, nice and throating when
you stood on it) as if I had put the stock muffler
back on and the intake sounds really loud now. It
is VERY strange. The truck is also acting a
little sluggish. Any ideas??? Like I said, it
runs and idles great, doesnt act like it is
missing or anything, but when I stand on it it
behaves as if it is getting choked and lost almost
all of its throaty sound. Am I making any sense??
Thanks a bunch guys!!

Fuel pressure is perfect when I checked a
couple weeks ago and I did the banging
on the catcon test and it sounded fine. I
am going to try and take the
performance program (superchips) back
out to see if that is causing it for some
reason. Any other ideas? ?
