Subject: 93 Dakota tranny issue?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just recently started having a problem with my Dakota, 93,
v6, 2wd with 123,000 miles. last week I was driving home
doing about 55-60 when my engine starts not sounding right
so I look at my rpm's and they are way too high, in the 3000
range when they should be 2000. so I took my foot off the
gas hoping this would help but did not, so I kept driving and
all the sudden went back to normal and drove fine the rest of
the way home. later on that day I was driving to work, come
to a red light stop and go, start going down a decent sized hill
not giving it any gas at all, going about 45-50 and all the
sudden engine revs high at 3000 on it's own. get to work at
bottom of hill and pull in the parking lot and it drives fine.
what the heck can the issue be. air filter is clean, has enough
oil and alittle more than enough tranny fluid, just passed
inspection too at end of January. please help with whatever
you got as this is my only vehicle.

This is a downshift from 4th (overdrive) to r3d gear. Three things can cause this:

1) Faulty TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It's about $25 for the part, easy to change out.
2) Defective or misadjusted downshift (TV, "Throttle Valve") cable.
3) Solenoid pack in the tranny sticking, or loose. The screws that hold it to the valve body can loosen over time, and this causes loss of overdrive operation, and failure to release the lockup torque converter, due to fluid leakage around the solenoids internally. For this you have to drop the transmission pan and tighten the 3 torx screws, on the passenger side of the valve body.
