I bought my '94 3.9/ 5 speed 148k miles last year with a bad timing chain. The sound was horrible and most mechanics couldn't even figure out what it was or never guessed it right. Mostly said EGR valve or lifters. The chain had waaayyy too much slack in it, but the gears looked fine. Put on a new double roller with new gears, ect and for a while it stayed quiet. The slack was within specs and timing was perfect.
Recently a rattle has developed when at normal operating temperature and it IS the chain. Can't figure out why - I know the 3.9 was notorious for this, but the modern double roller still shouldn't rattle... Have had every parts place in town tell me a tensioner is only available for the '97 and up 3.9's, but online tensioners are showing for '91-'03. Several mechanics told me my block isn't even drilled for the tensioner. Never looked for mounting holes when installing the chain. Didn't know about the tensioner at the time. Any chance the timing cover was cast wrong allowing the chain to slap against it??

Anyone out there familiar with this poblem???

I had to replace the chain on my 93'. It was as you said, rediculously sloppy and I replaced with a double roller. I drove it another 45k before selling it with no issues...the double roller should not stretch. How are you sure its the chain again?

Put my stethescope to it and it sounds exactly the same, but quiet compared to the other POS. I ride with the windows down, so I hear a lot more than most people would. Maybe I'll just turn up the radio and not worry about it.
