Subject: Trans. Fluid Level Check! IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone! I had a question about checking the A/T level in
my 1997 Dakota 5.2L 44RE.
In the owners manual as well as my Chilton manual, it states to
check the transmission fluid at idle at operating temperature by
cycling it through all of the gears, ending in park, then checking
the level on the stick.
HOWEVER, on the dipstick it tells me to check the level at
operating temperature idling in Neutral.
So... Which one is it? / Which one have you all had the most
success with?
The reason I am asking is that last time I thought I may have
overfilled it because the pan gasket began to seep / leak and
there were some air bubbles in the fluid. I replaced the gasket
and fluid again with about 1/2 QT less than I did before and
after cycling through the gears and in park, the dipstick reads
full, but in neutral it doesn't. It barely gets up to the Min. line.
The truck drives in and through all the gears correctly, but I just
want to make sure so I don't fry something later.
Thanks!

Message: I know my 2000 4x4 with the 45rfe AT fluid level is checked with the system hot, running, in neutral.
You might want to call a local tranny shop just to confirm for your vehicle.
