Subject: Engine swap on GenII dakota?
IP: Logged

Message:
A couple local mechanics who I feel are pretty reliable have said that the think I won't have any trouble (except maybe having to switch my sensors) swapping an engine out of a 96 Dakota and putting it into my 93. They are both 3.9 Magnum V 6's... I shouldn't have trouble swapping these engines, should I?

Use the PCM and intake and exhaust manifolds from the '93 and install them on the '96. The '93 has an EGR and the '96 should not have one. hence the reason to sw2ap intake manifolds. The exhaust manifolds on the '93 also flow better than the '96 exhaust manifolds.

Oh gosh... i'm freaking out about now. My mechanic calls me up and says he's going to ahve to check into it more on monday, but although the 93 and the 96 motor is the same, he tells me the the injectors are different, the wiring harness is different, and he doens't know if he's going to be abe to install this engine!!!! i'm about to have a nervous breakdown, they are BOTH Generation 2 Dakotas, they are BOTH 3.9 Magnum V6... there has got to be a way to make this work! I don't care about performance or more horsepower of one of another... I just want to change this engine and I want it to run. Do I need to change the computer unit? One mechanis I talked to said he checked with the Dodge website, and he said these two engines were interchangeable... please, i'm desperate for help!

About the PCM... He told me the wiring plugs don't line up on the PCM, and he can't use the one out of the 93 on the 96.

The '93 is ODB and the '96 is OBDII emission controls. Use the manifolds, injectors, sensors from the '93 on the '96 motor. It should all swap over. then yo can use the '96 motor with the PCM, injectors and wiring harness.

Well... hopefully I can get this thing up and running. I get conflicting opinions from everyone, but at least nobody has yet to say "You can't do it, it won't work". I've had two other people tell me that I don't need to switch the Manifolds, just the sensors and the injectors (This was someone who's actually done the swap). What's your opinion on that?

Well, the '93 has an EGR valve and the '96 should not. I think the EGR is mounted to the intake. If it is, you'll need to swap the intakes.

The EGR mounts to the back of the intake, but i think that the intake on the '96 still has a place for the egr tube (even though '96 was the first year that the daks stopped using them). you will need to use the exhaust manifold from the '93 that has the bung to connect the EGR tube to (forget which side), as the exhaust manifolds from the '96 do not have a place to connect the EGR tube. even if you need to switch parts from the '96 to the '93, it won't matter. any and all of the parts you will need to swap will interchange with no problem. if your mechanic can't figure it out, you may want to get another mechanic. I know they will interchange because i swapped a '94 v8 into my '96 dak and had no issues.
