Subject: 96' dakota over drive switch IP: Logged
Message: The overdrive cancel switch on my dakota broke. Mine is located on the dash to the left side of the steering wheel. Anyone ever replace this switch with any other type switch ie...toggle switch or such? I'm sure the original switch from Dodge is expensive. I don't really care what it looks like, as long as it works. Anyone have any alternative ideals?

Message: I would caution you against using a toggle type switch. That would be an 'on' or 'off' switch. Your current switch gives a momentary signal for the system to engage/ disengage. The factory system is self canceling...if you depress the button and lock out the overdrive, once the vehicle is shut off and restarted it is automatically reset to be 'on'. With a toggle you may be forcing power to a component 'at all times' when turned on...subsequently burning something up.
Dan00Dak has a good suggestion, check the salvage yards. Remember, this setup is also used in the same year(s) of Ram full size rigs. Getting a used switch should be relatively easy. I would still call the 'stealership' to get a price for one of these switches before putting in the legwork to get one from a auto recycler. The price difference may be smaller than we all think.
Good luck

Message: Thanks for the info. I will probably look for a used one first. I think the toggle will work if the right one is used, like a momentary spring-return to center. But that will be a last resort for sure

Message: It's not a momentary switch. It toggles a logic input to the computer that enables or disables the ground for the overdrive solenoid. Once the truck is shut off, the latch in the computer is reset.

Message: I'm not sure I understand "toggles" a input. Are you saying it's a momentary signal or a maintained signal?

Message: As far as the switch goes, it has 5 pins coming out the back, 3 of which are connected to the lights, (There are 2 seperate bulbs) 2 of the pins ring out to eachother when the switch is pushed, and it is a momentary connection. The Haynes manual I have, does not even show this switch in the schematics only a reference to the switch from the PCM module so I have no ideal what the color code means
