Hi, I asked a recent question about a 97 Dakota I bought and after trying everything my mechanic couldn't smog it because the check engine light wouldn't go off (the p0171 thingy). So today, thought I'd disconnect the - battery cable and turn the ignition on for 20 seconds to wipe the PCM. Turn on the vehicle and no check engine light.

I drive around for an hour or more, some city, about 40 miles on the highway, still no check engine light. And the mpg looks to me to be fine, guessing about an 1/8 a tank in about 50 miles. I turn it off, wait a few minutes, turn it back on the check engine light goes off after start.

Is this thing now fixed? I can go back tomorrow and get it smogged? The only thing that happened between me picking up the truck from the mechanic on Friday and after a reset the PCM today was that I filled up the gas tank It only had about a 1/4 of a tank in it while it was at the shop and there was some issues with the gauge sensors. Has anyone ever heard of filling up the gas tank in conjunction with this problem? Will my mechanic now hire me as a high paid consultant?

Actually, I really only want to know if people think that if that light is staying off then I am not going to have to take it another shop.

You may not be able to get it smogged tomorrow if
they plug into the Diagnostic Connector. It'll
throw a code but not a CEL.

Code P1684 the battery has been disconnected
within the last 50 starts.

It's so you can't do what you're trying to do.

You might have a weak fuel pump. Check the
pressure for the P0171 code.

WOOT! Passed smog with flying colors. I am smogged and registered and as soon as the snow melts I'm off to the high Sierras for a summer of fishing. Life is good.
