Message: i got a friend who claims that his awd grand cherokee is better than 4wd. i thought it was the other way around because theres a diffriential in the xfer case? isnt that the reason that the manuel says NOT to put our trucks in 4wd on pavement?

Message: How does your friend define "better?"
I think it depends upon your situation. 4wd does
have its advantages at times, AWD at others.
In 4wd, all the power is distributed to all the
wheels. Yes, that's why we can't drive them on
dry pavement. The front/rear driveshafts are
locked.
In AWD, the differential takes care of the speed
differences between the axles but it does not
distribute power evenly. You could get one wheel
spinning and have no traction.
Not so in 4wd. Even if one wheel were spinning
and you had an open rear, you'd still have another
axle trying to get you moving.
Off road, give me 4wd. On road, AWD would be
better I suppose. Why bother with it?

Message: Potentially, yes.
There are traction control systems out there that
can help but when it comes down to it for off-
roading, 4wd.
