Subject: 88' Dakota firing problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 88 dodge dakota 3.9, 2wd, runs like a raped ape when running. Recently I had an issue of it dieing on me while running and I wouldn't be able to get it to start back up. Did a little trouble shooting and I realized sometimes the plugs weren't getting spark, like a short or something. I had a mechanic replace the starter(was going bad anyways), put a tune up on it, replaced the relay coil inside the distributer, replaced the electrical ignition switch, and also replaced an accessory relay. I still only have fire at the plugs SOMETIMES, I cannot find a short and am becoming very frustrated with this problem, sometimes it will start right up and run and idle fine and once I shut it down it wont start again... just wondering if anyone has any ideas what my problem could be or if anyone else ran into this problem before. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

Ryan, it could be the coil, only thing is everytime I have had a coil go bad that was it, it just stopped running until I replaced it. I would suggest checking the wires to the computer to the ignition coil (mounted on the fire wall just about the engine) other than that run the codes to see if will tell you anything.
With yours all you have to do is turn the key to the run postion then off 3 times and leave it in the run pos. and the "Check Eng" light will flash, just count the flashes and that will be the codes. it only uses 2 digit codes. Like 3 flashes pause and 5 flashes, and so on. If it flashes 55 it means there are no stored codes.
Oh, I just thought, you might want to check the grounds as well, it COULD cause the problem you are having.
Good Luck
