 Subject: Busted Shock Bolt

Guy's: Just found out my front passenger lower shock bolt sheared in the lower control arm. Took it to Sears but they said they couldnt get it out and was afraid to heat the control arm too much because its made out of cast aluminum. Has anybody had this happen before and can the bolt be backed out or drilled out? Thx>>AJ

Are we talking about a 2WD truck? If so stay away from that Sears wannabe mechanic. The lower control arms should be stamped steel. Not sure if it's a 4WD if they are.

Daddio: No its a 4X4. He told me the lower control arm is cast alum so he didnt want to heat the area too much fearing the heat would make the alum brittle. I thought it sounded a bit strange. I never heard of a critical suspension piece being aluminum.

A lot of the newer trucks have them. Stronger and lighter than stamped steel.

Heat would not make it brittle, unless he quenched it in water or oil. Heat could make it softer and have less tensile strength, but not more brittle. Take it to a dealer or competent mechanic. Sears has none.
