Message: Ok, so i know i will probably get a lot of hate
replies for this, but here goes:
one of my neighbors might be willing to sell his
88 dakota, 4 cylinder, 2wd, shortbed, manual
trans, etc. the truck isnt in that great of shape
but looks cooler than hell with its perfect
patina. i was wanting to *maybe* get the truck and
swap in a VG30 3.0 v6 out of a 90-92 nissan
300zx. either that or a KA24 inline 2.4L 4 banger
and maybe turbo that. i dont have any idea how
much room is in the stock engine bay of that truck
and was wondering how easy the swap would be. i
want a sleeper minitruck with 200-300 horsepower
for the summer. also, will the truck fit a nissan
tranny? one of my friends is willing to sell me
the stock trans out of his 92 nissan 240sx for $50
its only got 90,000 miles on it. will the truck
hold up to such torque (it will probably get a 9
inch ford rearend)...?????

Message: my rusty 1990 handles 230 HP just fine
keep in mind, in 1992 they came factory with a 230 (maybe 235) hp v8
the frame is the same as the truck you are looking at
But yes, it will have the 7.25 axle, for an easy swap the 8.25 will handle it jsut fine and can be pulled from any old body style dakota
if you come across a 1988-1990 dakota sport, it prolly has a 3.92 rear end
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Message: Yeah I think the 92's into 93 had 230hp with the addition of bigger exhaust manifolds so you should be fine. My 93 was dynoed at 209.5HP at the rear wheels in the heat of summer. With an auto trans that is probably around 260 at the engine. I do think that the 88's have a slightly smaller engine compartment. What youre trying to do sounds like a lot of work and money... maybe more than its worth. If you do it I would like to know how it works out though.

Message: well since i can possibly get the truck for about 3-
400, tranny for 50, and an engine for maybe 6-700,
depending on which one i go with, i think itll be
more of a fun project for some summer trouble than
anything else. cheap enough i think, and should be a
blast to drive and blow the doors off any ricer with
one of their own engines :P

Message: Correction: the truck has a 3.9 V6 and a four speed,
i just spoke with the man today he said he would
sell it to me for about $490... its got 121,5xx
miles... the interior is torn up like hell but it
looks like a sleeper waiting to be born

Message: Can you do fabrication and wiring? I believe you'll need to do quite a bit of both to pull it off. Good luck on the project. And 2-300 HP will not require the Ford 9". Use the Chrysler 8.25.

Message: I would think it would have a 5 speed not a 4 speed. I agree with daddio, it will be a lot of time and maybe not so much money if you can have access to a junker so you can get the wiring, and other hard parts that could be hard to get. It does sound like a fun project though, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Message: fab and wiring shouldnt be too big of a hassle. just
get a bigstuff3 unit and wire away, lol. i am going
to school for this sort of stuff currently so i will
learn as i go.
the man might be willing to sell the truck in
january or so, depending on what he truly decides to
do with it. i personally think it would make a great
minitruck project once completed, but that is just
me.

Message: nissan? why not just drop a 350 in it? what alot of work. you could probably just build the 3.9 and do better. or move up to a 318.

Message: I would keep a Mopar engine. Try a '98 instead of a '88, this was the same year the R/T came on the streets. It was rated at around 250 HP and 345 ft--lbs. of torque. You can add many modification to the engine and even though it come with a HD automatic 4 speed. I would prefer a shift kit.
But it's really about what your underline budget is and how much you'll be willing to spend over budget. I've done that many time with my Dakota.

Message: no chevy motor will ever live in a dodge that i own.
and i want something that is lightweight and still
quite potent (not to mention unique). the neighbor
is possibly selling the 88 so unless you can find a
98 for under 500 bucks that will readily run and
drive, im not interested (no offense). my budget is
not much so i have little to work with.
