Subject: ABS and Break light on - Speedo works

Message:
This is a common problem with dakota's, after replacing both speed sensors as suggested here at the site (even though the speedo was still working), I did some more research and it was pointing to a bad ABS module. I talked to a local shop (700 bucks) and a stealership (1000 bucks). I found a company online called module master (you can google it for a web address). I took my ABS ECM out a Kelsey Hayes Dodge and sent it in to them.

The good
It fixed the problem.
It took one week from ship to return.
Cost was just under 200 bucks including second day shipping both ways.
Took about 1 hour total of my time, removal, packing, shipping, and reinstall.
Friendly and prompt responses to phone calls.

The bad
Speedo, Odo, Cruise and Trip computer do not work without this module.
Packing, they suggest you pack it with 4 inches of padding on everyside yet when they return it to you it has no more than an inch on top and bottom (you end up spending alot on shipping you don't need to).
You can't swap modules because they are hard coded to your VIN.

Here was the overall cost.

$42 outbound shipping
$155 repair, new bolts and return shipping
$79 for a GPS unit to be my speedo while the module was being repared.

Overall pretty darn cheap and I got a new GPS out of it. Not a bad deal.

Anyhow if anyone else has the pesky ABS and Brake light on and your Speedometer still works it maybe a damaged module.

On the older trucks (92), which have 2-wheel rear ABS, having both brake and ABS lights on can also indicate a blown brake light fuse. I discovered this last year when towing a car; the U-Haul dolly had a wiring short.
