There are 'sim' devices to use however .

Message: when the engine is running the o2 sensor sends certain amount of volts to the computer telling it how much o2 is in the exauhst. if it is too much or too little, the engine light goes on. A resistor would work if you got the right amount of ohms to send the right amount of volts to the computer.

Yes but, I believe that voltage is supposed to vary somewhat. If it does not it will probably trip the CEL.

On a Dakota or any other vehicle, highly doubtful, unless it was plugged completely. And I hope you don't have any emissions testing where you live.

Message: I felt I had to chime in here. Do not waste your money on those stupid electronic o2 sims and whatnot that may or may not even work. Don't even need a resistor. Don't worry about all that crap.
All you need is a pair of spark plug defoulers.
I have a 98 Dakota Sport 5.2 5spd. I recently put in a full 3" exhaust (all the way from front to back (collector included)) with a magnaflow muffler and high-flow cat (model 14109), which is basically straight pipe. I can't find pics of it, but basically, you can look through it and it's just a big 3" hole all the way through with the catalytic material around the outside. I got it from Performance Peddler. (http://www (dot) performancepeddler (dot) com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=MAG14109)
Anyway, I don't want to link to another forum, but if you google "do it yourself o2 simulator," it should come up. There's a dude on there who did this, and provided lots of great photos. So I gave it a shot, and it works AWESOMELY. For a fraction of the cost of any of these other ridiculous solutions. No check engine light; no "limp mode;" no problem!
Basically you buy the defoulers which come in a pack of two for like a couple bucks. Drill one of them out with a half inch drill bit. Easiest way is with a drill press. I didn't drill mine all the way through. Just far enough that the sensor can fit in snugly without pressing up against the bottom of the defouler. Screw the two defoulers into each other, and plug the sensor into that, then screw that whole assembly into your o2 bung. No more check engine light. :)
I did this a while ago and no light yet. I can get on it, and my exhaust sounds so lovely, and the sensor doesn't complain, because it feels the heat, and senses clean air. :) (And DAMN is my exhaust loud and impressive on the freeway, or even just around town!)

A mini cat right infront of your O2 sensor

A module that sends the correct signals back

Message: The first one is effing scam gimmick bullcrap. The second one probably is too.
Seriously, just buy the $2.00 spark plug defoulers and make your own in 10 minutes. It works perfectly. That's essentially what that first option is, only he's trying to rip people off by saying he somehow managed to find precious metal honeycombs and is putting them inside. BULLS**T. It's that grout netting stuff or whatever.
Basically, how this trick works is it takes the sensor out of the airflow, so that it detects the heat from the exhaust, but tells the computer the air coming out is clean. Trust me. Don't waste your money on those stupid unnecessary gimmicks.

Buy those.
Drill one out with a half inch drill bit to look like this:
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg268/12sws27/how%20to%20pics/newproject98Jimmy310.jpg
Then screw the sensor into the one you drilled out, and put the other one on the end of that so it looks like this:
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg268/12sws27/how%20to%20pics/newproject98Jimmy315.jpg
Then plug it all back into your exhaust. No more light. If the light stays on after driving it for a while, that means there is another problem elsewhere; possibly clogged plugs.

Message: Yep. I had no problems with my setup. :) The defoulers have the same size head on them as the stock sensor too, so you only need one wrench. Guess the threading is a standard size, and it happens to be the same for your spark plugs. :P
But yeah, $2.50, and no CEL.
