Subject: My first truck IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone. I am 15 about to be 16 and I just bought my
first truck, it's a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 with a 5.2 and
a 4 speed auto. 160,000 miles, has had Mobil 1 synthetic ran
through her since 90,000 miles and it supposedly has a Comp
Cam I'm not entirely sure if it does but I'm think it might
because the idle is kinda choppy like what a cammed engine
might sound like. Can some people who have knowledge
about this particular model just tell me what I'm in for with this
truck. Is it reliable? I know it's pretty ballsy cause it broke the
tires loose all the way through first and barked em in second.
Haha. But will she treat me well? I live in Michigan so I would
like to know how it'll hold up in winter also. Thank you ahead
of time.

Message: By the way, something I forgot to add. The wheel bearings,
brakes all around, and the rear end has been replaced with
less than 12,000 on them. :)

Message: its just broken in! what do you mean by choppy, when you put you head next to the exauhst do you hear the engine misfiring? havnt had a cammed engine, but im pretty sure the valve train would vibrate alittle more than usual with a higher lobed cam.

Like most any other make and model, if you treat them well they should return the favor. I've got an '00 QC with about 135k and it's given me great service. I am always up on the regular maintenance too.

Message: BENVAAGE, I guess "choppy" was a bad way to describe it sry. But what i mean is that the exhaust note just has a kinda lope to it if you know what i mean. it doesnt sound like a misfire. it just has an exhaust note like what most cammed motors have. and Daddio, i dont plan on beating the hell out of it, i just want to know with normal maitenence and normal driving have they been known to last a while. but i guess you answered my question. Thanks to the both of you.

Message: Vmax, congradulations on your first truck.
I would suggest you get a repair manual, it can be a good help if you need to work on it. I have an 88 Dakota 3.9 (V6) 4X4 5speed with 197,000 miles. I did a complete reman on the engine at 172,000 and I am very happy with mine, but you actually have the better engine. I wish you well.

Message: The 5.2 Magnum is the final version of the LA smallblocks.
Production of the basic design ran for around 35 years. The
318, I mean 5.2 is a rock solid engine. Biggest problem is the
horribly designed Magnum intake manifold belly pan gasket.
The aftermarket has upgrades available so when yours blows,
repair with an upgrade.
