I have an '02 4.7 Auto 4x4 and today was running fine. Around lunch I stopped for gas and on the way out of the gas station when I went to pull out on the road the truck hesitated...and clunked as if the driveshaft had slack in it or something. Then the next stop light same thing...and again...so I start playing around with it to see what going on...around 15-20 mph give it a little extra throttle and it kind of jerks as if the tranny is slipping or something...back off the throttle and it quickly upshifts but then almost immediately downshifts for no reason and holds that gear much longer than usual. I roll the windows down and duck in a quiet side street and do it all over again...no wierd noises. I look back down at the instrument pannel and my check engine light is on. So I limp it back to my in-laws place a couple blocks away and it feels the whole time like there is drag or resistance causing it to hold gears longer.

My father in law says a friend of his got a tank of gas from that same station with abt 20% water a couple months back and they paid for all his repairs. But talking to that guy his car just plain quit. My Dak is still idling like a champ. We called a flat bed and had it taken down to a dealer. Drove it on and off of the tow truck...always starts.

Any ideas? The truck I bought in May with 47K miles. in August I brought it in for a wheel speed sensor issue to get it fixed on my 3 mo 3K mile warranty and they ended up replacing all the guts in my rear axle. Said the limited slip had come apart and mangled everything. I mention this because it almost feels like a rear end or tranny issue.

If the CEL is on, and even if it isn't, check for codes first. That's what the CEL is for. To tell you a code has been tripped. Once you get the code it should point you in the direction of the problem.

The dealer just called and said all of the codes and there were aparently several pointed to the transmission. They pulled the dipstick and found metal shavings in the fluid and said the fluid is burnt. They suspect that it has burned up clutches in the tranny. They think that pulling the pan and tearing into it to assess the extent of the damage is going to run up to $350. The expect it to need at least an overall.

Should I let them go for it? If it does need an overall or replacement should I find a one from a bone yard or get the new/rebuild from the dealer?

You may want to try to find a competent trans shop for a second opinion. What were the code numbers? If they apply that $350.00 to your total repair bill that might help.

So I talked with Aamco and they said they would do an "external diagnostic" including testing presures and other things. Their diagnostic woudl be free but they say they can tell exactly what is wrong by doing this. If they rebuild the tranny they use better than OEM (they called it updated) parts and it's warranted for 3 yr 36K mi. Their shop time is billed at $90/hr

Dodge says their tranny specialist is the one working on it. If they rebuild all parts are covered for 12 mo 12 K miles, if we go with a Remanufactured tranny for replacement it's a 3yr 100K warranty. They are including the $95 diagnosis in the $350 estimate. They bill their shop time at $95/hr.

I'm thinking that I'll stay with Dodge becasue they have a tranny specialist working on it and it's nearly the same price as a tranny shop.

They didn't give code info and I didn't ask but they said the codes were for the torque converter when i talked to the service rep a few minutes ago.

What do you think? So far all they've done is drain the fluid becasue they had to wait for the tranny guy to be available.

Well, turns out the codes pointed to the torque converter, the fluid was completely burnt as were several clutches.

Chose the remanufactured tranny to get the 3 yr 100K warranty. Bill came to $4100 including a $350 CV boot replacement (rip off) caused by the tow truck who put his hook around it. Anyway, called Chrysler Customer Care Center and they reviewed the case and agreed to give me $1000 reimbursement within 30 days of me sending them the receipt.

Definitely not happy that my dak with 50K mi needed a new tranny but very pleased with Dodge being willing to assist. Ordered some AMS oil for the engine...need to protect that thing for sure!
