Subject: Problem replacing front shocks 2WD
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm having trouble getting the upper shock nut loose
on one of my front shocks (2WD). Is there a trick
to securing upper the shock stud so that it doesn't
also turn when you are trying to loosen the nut? I
tried to grip the very top of the stud with vice
grips, but of course then you couldn't use a socket
on the nut - just an open end wrench.

Any other tricks out there?

I use a deep socket on an impact wrench. Other than that your method should work also. It's just takes more time.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably just take it
to the shop and let them get that sucker off. I
don't have an impact wrench. I already botched up
the top of the stud a little bit, trying to get
that nut off.
Thought about putting some vice grips in the coil
spring and clamping down on the polished part of
the strut (effectively destroying the shock - but
I guess thats ok....assuming I can remove the
shock!)

You could do that also or use a "hot" wrench if you've got one.

If you are replacing the shock and not concerned about damaging the thread on the rod, use a good sharp chisel and split the nut. Point the chisel down right next to the thread. A few good whacks should do it. You may have to do it on both sides of the thread to get the nut off.

If you going to replace the old shocks, get a reciprocating saw and just cut it off. Takes about 30 seconds
