Subject: rear diff noise IP: Logged
Message: 2002 2wd with the 9.25 rear end - open diff
I noticed a groaning noise coming out of the rear end that gets louder & quieter as I speed up & slow down. Crawled under & found gear oil slung all over the bottom of the truck so obviously the pinion seal is shot. Pulled the plug & stuck my finger in & there was gear oil in the diff, maybe 3/4 full. I topped it off but the noise remains.
What am I looking at here?

Message: Expect a bad pinion bearing.
When one of the pinion bearings goes, it allows the pinion shaft to move laterally, which distorts and loosens the seal, causing leaks. It also can mess up the other pionion bearing.

Not to mention the pinion and ring gears also.
