Message: Ok, My son complained that his 97 dakota was having trouble pulling a small trailer. (2.5L 4 cyl engine so I knew it would'nt have much power.) I let him drive my truck (97 gm 5.7 3/4 ton. ( told him not to forget that he had a trailer back there) drove his truck. barely pulled itself around so I changed cap and rotor, wires and plugs and air cleaner. minor change. Catalytic convertor? What kind of pressure readings before and after cat should I see if good? bad? thanks

Message: Had the codes checked, none set. Still think it's the cat. I can check the pressure across the cat. thanks, Jim

Message: I agree with the four cylinder thing there but this thing should at least be able to handle it in fifth gear on level road. Spark plugs were badly worn but light tan,Pops once in a while at shift and is really touchy taking off. have to keep the RPMs up.

Message: My boat weighs 7240 lbs. what he towed was a small equiptment trailer. I'll test the exhaust pressure around the cat tomorrow and let you know the results. This thing won't overcome wind resistance in 5th no trailer, empty bed.

Message: a 1990 stock v6 is the same way
wind or slight inlcine and it jsut plain sucks and would be out of OD and into 3rd
manual was into 4th just to maintain speed
and that v was rated about the same as the 4cyl you have
it is just plain not enough power for the truck

Message: Doesn't matter what a 1990 6cyl might be like. They don't sound plugged up and pop when you shift. Had a 2.5 liter in an S-10 and it would run circles around this thing. This thing rates at 120 hp. should overcome wind resistance in 5th. Darned thing is almost dangeous to drive. tests tomorrow should shed more light.

Message: 1990 v6 was rated at 125 hp
it couldnt get out of its own way
just sayin with similar weight and similar power similar performance should be expected

Message: Put a gauge on it right at the schrader valve.
Another thing you can check if it's got a regular
muffler. Get under and bang on it with the side of a
fist. could be rotted inside and starting to
collapse. Keep in mind as someone told you above,
These motors were very weak for these trucks to
begin with so you could be chasing a gremlin.

Message: Well I think I might have found the gremlin. some idiot put 17" dodge rims on and this idiot didn't realise they weren't stock rims. high profile tires to boot. We use tire diameter to tune shift points and bias the rear axle to wanna turn left at the race track. tire circumference varies quite a bit between any 4 "identical" tires.
